MAYGUEZ, Puerto Rico, July 9, 2011 –Brandon Wynn of Voorhees, N.J., a member of Team Hilton HHonors, won the still rings gold medal at the 2011 Puerto Rico Cup in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. Tyler Mizoguchi of Houston, who trains with the University of Illinois, captured the bronze medal for pommel horse. Individual event finals conclude on July 10. Wynn easily won the still rings title, posting a 15.925. Brazil’s Arthur Zaneti was second at 15.675, followed by Puerto Rico’s Tommy Ramos at 15.575. Mizoguchi was fourth at 15.050. Wynn also won the Puerto Rico Cup’s all-around silver medal on the first night of competition.
On pommel horse, Mizoguchi earned a 14.050 to place behind Puerto Rico’s Rafael Morales at 14.525 and Colombia’s Jesid Pena at 14.200. Dylan Akers of Houston/Cypress Academy finished in fifth at 13.350.
The U.S. gymnasts who qualified for the individual event finals scheduled for July 10 are: vault – Wynn; parallel bars – Sam Mikulak of Newport Coast, Calif./University of Michigan, and Mizoguchi; and horizontal bar – Andrew Elkind of Cherry Hill, N.J./U.S. Olympic Training Center at Colorado Springs, and Wynn.
Earlier in the competition, the USA won the team silver medal. The U.S. Team, made up of three junior and three senior members of the national team, also included Adrian de los Angeles of Long Beach, Calif./SCATS HB.
Justin Spring of the University of Illinois and Grigor Chalikyan of SCATS HB are the coaches for the U.S. team.
This international competition features 75 gymnasts from 12 countries – Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Columbia, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, United States, and Venezuela.
