Team USA took home the gold medal at the 2008 Maia Acro Cup

MAIA, Portugal, March 14, 2008 – Mallory Henthorn of Independence, Mo., and Savannah Shields of Grain Valley, Mo., who train at Acro Explosion, claimed the gold medal in senior women’s pair, and Kyle Bloom and Madeline Bones, both of San Jose, Calif./Aerial Tumbling & AcroGymnastics, won the junior mixed pair title at the Maia Cup in Maia, Portugal. The USA won a total of five medals, four gold and one bronze.

In the age-group competition, Chelcea Reigal of Kearney, Mo., Ashley Hargis of Kearney, Mo., and Krissy Weidmaier of Holt, Mo., who train at Rising Star Acrobatic Club, won the gold medal in women’s group, and Alexa Vitale, Kelly Phillips and Samantha Larson, all of San Jose, Calif./Aerial Tumbling & AcroGymnastics, placed fifth. The mixed pair of Jake Kanavel and Eirian Smith, both of San Jose, Calif./Aerial Tumbling & AcroGymnastics, claimed the bronze medal.

The mixed pair of Kanavel and Smith joined the women’s groups of Hargis, Reigel and Weidmaier, and Larson, Phillips and Vitale to win the gold medal in the 11-16 year-old team division.

More than 270 athletes from nine countries competed in the Maia Cup.
