LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., June 5, 2012 – Region 8 captured the first ever Level 8 National Team Challenge at the USA Gymnastics Open Championships, a nationwide invitational for women’s gymnastics Levels 4-8 and Xcel, at the Jostens Center at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. More than 500 gymnasts competed in the second annual that event wrapped up June 3.


The competition featured a Level 8 National Team Challenge; both individual and club team champions for Xcel and Levels 4-8 competition; and crowned an overall club team champion.


At the event, Region 8 captured the first ever Level 8 National Team Challenge. Teams were comprised of eight all-star athletes from their respective regions. Region 8 scored 189.075, followed by Region 3 with 188.575 and Region 2 with 188.300.


Team Ohio won the overall club championship with 31 points. Points were awarded based on team placement per session for Levels 4-8 and Xcel where five points were given for each session winner, two points for second place and one point for third. North Shore (La.) finished in second place with 18 points and Team Illinois came in third with 16 points.
