DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., March 27, 2010 – On the final day of competition at the 2010 Trampoline & Tumbling Pan American Championships at the Daytona Beach (Fla.) Ocean Center, the USA won five gold medals in the senior competition. The day’s total medal haul was eight gold, two silver and three bronze medals for the senior and age-group level divisions.
Steven Gluckstein of Atlantic Highlands, N.J., won a total of three gold medals – individual trampoline, synchronized trampoline and trampoline team. For the synchro gold, he teamed with Logan Dooley of Lake Forest, Calif., and for the trampoline team title, they were joined by Michael Devine of Winnebago, Ill. Nani Vercruyssen of Honolulu captured the women’s individual trampoline title, and Austin White of Irvine, Calif., claimed the title in men’s double mini-trampoline.
Dooley picked up a third medal, the silver in men’s trampoline. Vercruyssen teamed with Hayley Butcher of St. John, Ind., to earn the women’s synchronized trampoline bronze medal. Sarah Gandy of Paris, Texas, claimed the women’s double-mini silver.
In the age group competition, the gold medalists were: Mackenzee Martin and Alyssa Smith, both from Lubbock, Texas/Air Extreme, women’s 11-12 synchronized trampoline; Henry Baer, Town and Country, Mo./St. Louis Elite, and Nick Piontek, Warrensburg, Mo./Kansas City Trampoline Club, men’s 15-16 synchronized trampoline; and Justin Hackett, Colorado Springs, Colo./Great Lakes Griffins, men’s 17+ double mini. The bronze medalists were: Shea Silhan, Morton, Texas, and Caanon Gibbons, Seminole, Texas/Acrospirits, women’s 11-12 synchro; and Ronald (Jake) Jacobson, Rocklin, Calif./American Powerhouse, and Sam Chiacchia, Colorado Springs, Colo./ArtSports, men’s 13-14 synchro.
The other champions were: Mariana DeAquino, Minas Tenis Clube/Brazil, women’s 17+ double mini; Corissa Boychuk, Canada, senior women’s double mini; Canada, senior men’s double mini-trampoline team; Meghan Hefford, Canada, senior women’s tumbling; Bruno Martini, Brazil, senior men’s tumbling; Canada, senior women’s trampoline team; Brynn Tucker and Rachel Stone, Team BC/Canada, women’s 13-14 synchronized trampoline; Etienne Duchesne and Jean-Christophe, Viagym/Canada, men’s 13-14 synchro; Jenna Morgis and Celina Madigan, Skyriders/Canada, women’s 15-16 synchro; Chelsea Nerpio and Anita Cirillo, Team BC/Canada, women’s 17+ synchro; John Rowden and Connar Tomalty, Team BC/Canada, men’s 17+ synchro; and Samantha Sendel and Samantha Smith, Canada, 30.70, women’s senior synchro.
More than 260 gymnasts from six North and South American countries are vying for continental titles in the senior, junior and age group categories. In addition to the United States, the other countries participating in the Pan American Championships are Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. Two men and two women will qualify their countries for the Youth Olympic Games.
