Indianapolis, Ind. – USA Gymnastics national team member and 1999 Visa American Cup Champion, Jennie Thompson (Cincinnati, Ohio), is retiring from competitive gymnastics.
“Jennie has been a role model and leader for the women’s gymnastics program for many years,” said Bela Karolyi, USA Gymnastics Women’s National Team Coordinator and Thompson’s original gymnastics coach. “Her dedication to the sport has been impressive and inspirational to athletes, coaches and fans.”
“USA Gymnastics supports Jennie’s decision to retire and wishes her the best of luck in future endeavors,” said Bob Colarossi, President of USA Gymnastics. “Jennie will continue to be a vital member of our gymnastics community in a number of possible roles.”
Thompson’s decision to retire stems from complications related to a recurring ankle injury, inhibiting her training for the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team.
Thompson’s career highlights include winning the 1999 Visa American Cup and the 1993 Junior National Championships. Thompson was a U.S. team member at the 1999 and 1997 World Championships, the 1999 Pan American Games and the 1994 Goodwill Games. She has been a member of the U.S. National Team from 1992-2000.
Thompson plans to stay at Cincinnati Gymnastics Academy for the next few months to support her elite teammates in their attempt to make the 2000 Olympic Team.
