INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Aug. 13, 2009 – After the first day of competition, Kyla Ross of Aliso Viejo, Calif., leads the junior all-around competition at the 2009 Visa Championships in Dallas, Texas, with a 57.850. The second day of the cumulative junior women’s all-around is Saturday, Aug. 15, at 1 p.m.
Ross, who trains at Gym-Max Gymnastics, led the entire session, scoring a 15.150 on vault for her double-twisting Yurchenko, the day’s highest score; 13.750 on bars; 14.750 on beam, the event’s top score; and 14.20 on floor, which included a tucked full-twisting double back and a double Arabian.
“It was a surprise today to lead the all-around,” said Ross. “I didn’t expect it. I just came into the competition hoping to hit all of my routines and do my best.”
Alexandra Raisman of Needham, Mass./Brestyan’s American Gymnastics, finished second in the all-around standings with a score of 56.650. Bridgette Caquatto of Naperville, Ill./ Naperville Gymnastics Club, finished third with an all-around total of 56.350.
Brandy Johnson Gymnastics’ Morgan Smith of Clearmont, Fla., finished fourth in the all-around with a score of 55.850. Tying for fifth in the all-around were Cincinnati Gymnastics Academy’s Amanda Jetter of Milford, Ohio, and WOGA’s Grace McLaughlin of Allen, Texas, at 55.800.
Jetter had the day’s top score on the floor exercise at 14.300, with McLaughlin taking top honors on bars at 14.250.
The U.S. junior champions will be determined by the combined scores from today and Saturday, Aug. 15. The senior women’s competition is in the evening on both Aug. 13 and Aug. 15. The men’s competition wraps up on Aug. 14, with acrobatic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics and trampoline and tumbling competing through Saturday.
