Sanders sweeps rhythmic event finals
Day Four of Four
Cleveland – Mary Sanders (Ontario, Canada) swept all four individual event titles at rhythmic competition of the 2002 U.S. Gymnastics Championships. Sanders won the rope with a score of 25.150, the hoop with a 25.350, the ball with a 25.200, and the clubs with a 25.950.
Olga Karmansky (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Shayna Javornicky (Queens, N.Y.) each took home four medals also. Karmansky won the silver in rope, hoop, and ball, and the bronze in clubs, while her Isadora Rhythmics teammate, Javornicky, took home the bronze in rope, hoop, and ball, and the silver in clubs.
On the juniors side, Kristin Kaye (Northbrook, Ill.) and Lisa Wang (Buffalo Grove, Ill.), who placed first and second in the all-around competition on Thursday, took home two gold medals each in the individual event finals. Kaye won the ball and ribbon finals, while Wang won the hoop and clubs.
Trampoline and Tumbling
2000 Olympian Jennifer Parilla (Lake Forest, Calif.) won her third senior women’s trampoline competition, and was 3.2 points ahead of Alaina Hebert (Broussard, La.), who finished second. In the men’s competition, 2000 Olympic alternate and five-time national trampoline champion Ryan Weston (Chubbuck, Idaho) won his sixth national trampoline title with a score of 104.80.
“I felt it was a lot of fun. I’m really starting to enjoy competing, and it’s easier to compete feeling that way,” said Weston of his performance.
In the tumbling competition, Frankie Hartman was the men’s winner, while Lajeana Davis won on the women’s side. Kallan Kampas won the women’s senior double mini competition, and Keith Douglas was the men’s winner. Hebert and partner Shanelle Landry took the gold in the women’s synchronized trampoline competition, and Karl Heger and Nick Ludwig won the men’s competition.
