LISBURN, N. Ireland, March 17, 2007 — 2007 Tyson American Cup champion Shawn Johnson of West Des Moines, Iowa, won the all-around and the USA earned the team title in the USA vs. Great Britain competition held today in Lisburn, N. Ireland. Johnson’s score of 60.150 led a U.S. sweep of the top seven spots in the all-around with Shayla Worley of Orlando, Fla., and Samantha Peszek of McCordsville, Ind., finishing second and third, respectively.

In the team competition, the USA garnered a total of 238.50 points to Britain’s 218.10. The event’s format had six women competing for the team, but only five scores counted for each apparatus. The gymnasts whose scores counted toward the team score were Bianca Flohr of Creston, Ohio, Ivana Hong of Blue Springs, Mo., Natasha Kelley of Katy, Texas, Johnson, Peszek and Worley. For the all-around, Kelley was fourth, followed by Hong, Bridget Sloan of Pittsboro, Ind., and Flohr in fifth through seventh.

Four U.S. and four British gymnasts advanced to the individual event finals on Sunday, March 18. The USA sent a team of eight gymnasts to the event, six of whose scores counted in the team competition, but all eight competed for advancement in the individual event finals.

Here’s the event breakdown for the USA for the event finals: vault –Hong, Johnson, Peszek and Worley; uneven bars – Johnson, Kelley, Peszek and Worley; balance beam – Hong, Johnson, Kelley and Peszek; and floor exercise – Johnson, Hilary Mauro of West Chester, Ohio, Sloan, and Worley. Flohr did not advance to event finals because of the limitation of four U.S. gymnasts.

To win the all-around title, Johnson scored a 14.550 on vault and a 15.100 on uneven bars. On balance beam, she and Hong tied for first with a 15.500. Johnson posted a 15.000 on floor routine.

Worley’s total score of 59.650 included a 14.600 on vault, a 15.450 on uneven bars, a 15.000 on beam and a 14.600 on floor. With a total of 58.650, Peszek scored a 14.500 on vault, a 14.600 on uneven bars, a 15.300 on balance beam and a 14.250 on floor.

On floor, Sloan earned a 14.800 and Mauro posted a 14.650, to put them in the top four U.S. scores for the event, behind Johnson and Worley. Mauro did not compete on all four apparatus.
