COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., March 31, 2018 – The U.S. Air Force Academy won six individual event medals on the final day of the USA Gymnastics Men’s Collegiate National Championships, held at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. Both the College of William and Mary and the U.S. Naval Academy claimed four medals each, with Arizona State University and Springfield College bringing home two medals apiece.

The six event champions are: floor exercise, Nick Garcia, Arizona State University; pommel horse, Fletcher Braunton, U.S. Air Force Academy; still rings, Peter Makey, College of William and Mary; vault, Kiwan Watts, Arizona State University; parallel bars, Tanner West, U.S. Naval Academy; and horizontal bar, Lukas Texeira, U.S. Air Force Academy.

The annual awards were also announced at the conclusion of the championships.

  • Outstanding Senior Athlete of the Year, Varsity: Griffin Antle, College of William and Mary
  • Assistant Coach of the Year, Collegiate: Rob Survick and Evan Shaw, Arizona State University
  • Assistant Coach of the Year, Varsity: Bo Morris, College of William and Mary
  • Head Coach of the Year, Collegiate: Scott Barclay, Arizona State University
  • Head Coach of the Year, Varsity: Jeff Robinson, U.S. Air Force Academy

Garcia won the floor exercise title with his 13.950. Air Force’s Jonah Urlaub, the 2018 varsity all-around champion, took second at 13.800, followed by his teammate, Ryan Girouard with 13.750.

On pommel horse, Braunton clinched the top spot with a 13.400. The College of William and Mary’s Antle and Jacopo Gliozzi finished second (13.050) and third (12.950), respectively.

The still rings crown went to William and Mary’s Peter Makey (13.550). Air Force’s Ethan Esval and Navy’s Christian Correale tied for second at 13.500.

Watts, who won the collegiate all-around title, captured the vault gold with a 14.450. Springfield College’s Stephen Lewis was second (14.200), with third going to Navy’s Tanner West (14.150).

West garnered the parallel bars title (13.650) for his second medal. Springfield’s Jannik Haas posted a 13.300 for second. Nathan Tsuji of the University of Washington rounded out the podium at 13.000

Lukas Texeira of the Air Force won the high bar crown with his 14.000. David Allen of William and Mary scored a 13.250 for second. The Navy’s Max Gerber took the bronze at 12.700.

On the first day, the U.S. Air Force Academy claimed the varsity team title and Arizona State posted a 393.350 total for top Collegiate Division honors.

At the men’s USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships, the team competition is divided into two categories, varsity and collegiate. The varsity competition is for Division I, II or III, four-year institutions with gymnastics as a varsity sport that provide two or less full scholarships as well as the military academies, and the collegiate team category is for two-year or four-year degree-granting schools with gymnastics as a club sport. The schools in the Collegiate Division were the College of William and Mary, Springfield College, U.S. Air Force Academy, and U.S. Naval Academy. The Collegiate Division includes Arizona State University, Northern California United, Southern California United, Temple University and University of Washington.
