KATY, Texas, Jan. 16, 2016 – Cameron Bock of Tustin, Calif./SCATS Gymnastics, won the parallel bars gold medal on the final day of the 2016 RD761 International Junior Team Cup at Leonard E. Merrell Center in Katy, Texas. The USA picked up four other medals: silver – Matthew Wenske of Houston/Cypress Academy, for vault; and bronze – Bennet Huang of Palo Alton, Calif./West Coast Olympic Gymnastics Academy, for pommel horse, Bock for still rings, and Vitaly Guimaraes of Arvada, Colo./5280 Gymnastics, for horizontal bar.
Bock won the parallel bars crown with his 14.550, followed by Britain’s Giarni Regini-Moran at 14.300 and Japan’s Kakeru Tanigawa with 14.200. Shane Wiskus of Spring Park, Minn./Mini-Hops Gymnastics, was fourth (13.400). Bock’s second medal was the bronze for still rings (14.200). Joe Fraser of Great Britain won the title on a tie-breaker with Tanigawa (14.300), Wenske posted a 14.000 for fifth.
On vault, Wenske captured the silver medal after scoring a 14.275. The title went to Britain’s Giarni Regini-Moran (14.950). Colombia’s David Toro was third (14.000), and Bock was sixth (13.525).
Huang’s 14.150 on the pommel horse garnered the bronze. Tanigawa was first with 14.850, and Britain’s Joshua Nathan was third (14.550). Tanner Justus of Cypress, Texas/Cypress Gymnastics, placed fifth (13.500). For the horizontal bar, Colombia’s Dilan Jimenez and Guimaraes both posted a 13.450, but Guimaraes earned the bronze on a tie-breaker. Britain’s Hamish Carter was the champion with 13.750. Wiskus just missed the medal stand with his 13.400.
The floor exercise medalists were: Regini-Moran, gold (15.250); Tanigawa, silver (14.800); and Nathan, bronze (14.550).
The RD761 International Junior Team Cup is named in honor of U.S. Junior National Team member Ricky Deci, who tragically passed away in 2001. The annual RD761 age group invitational competition supports the Ricky Deci Memorial Fund, which in turn funds a USA Gymnastics elite development training camp held each summer at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.
