INDIANAPOLIS -Vanessa Atler (Canyon Country, Calif.) won four gold medals and a silver in competition at the Australia Cup, held in Melbourne, Australia.

The silver medalist at the 1998 John Hancock U.S. Gymnastics Championships, Atler won the all-around in Australia with a score of 38.537, surpassing Zeena McLaughlin of Australia by nearly a half point. The only event Atler failed to win was balance beam, where McLaughlin scored a 9.675 to edge out Atler at 9.650.
Atler’s largest margins of victory came in vault, where she scored a 9.575, and in floor exercise, where she posted a 9.650. She won gold medals in each of those events at the 1998 Goodwill Games in New York. She is the reigning USA champion in floor exercise.
In men’s competition, the USA recorded two top-five finishes in the all-around. Chris Young (Winston-Salem, N.C.) placed fourth while Trent Wells (Berkeley, Calif.) was fifth. Jesus Carballo of Spain took the gold, followed by Dmitri Kaspiarovich of Belarus and Victor Cano of Spain. (NOTE: men’s scores and individual event results were not available.)
