ITHACA, N.Y., April 8, 2022 – After two sessions of preliminary competition on the first day of the 2022 USA Gymnastics Women’s Collegiate National Championships, the Air Force Falcons, Brown Bears, Lindenwood Lions and Texas Woman’s Pioneers are set to battle it out for national bragging rights Saturday at Cornell’s Newman Arena in Ithaca, N.Y. In total, eight teams along with individual qualifiers from three additional universities were in action Friday with the all-around title and spots Sunday’s individual apparatus finals also on the line.

The Bears advanced to the team final in the top spot with a 194.925 followed by the Pioneers who similarly emerged from the day’s second session behind a combined 194.700. Air Force (194.550) and Lindenwood (193.800) punched their tickets to Day 2 during the afternoon session with the latter edging the defending champions from Southeast Missouri State by a tenth of a point. The team final will kick off tomorrow at 7 p.m. ET with Air Force starting on vault, TWU on uneven bars, Brown on balance beam and Lindenwood on floor exercise.

In the individual all-around competition, Cornell’s Sydney Beers (Bellmore, N.Y.) delivered a 39.125 to secure the top spot. She nosed Air Force’s Genevieve Sabado (Pomona, Calif.) and Velandra Brochi (Round Rock, Texas) who rounded out an all-freshman podium with scores of 38.950 and 38.775, respectively.

The top-five gymnasts from each session on each apparatus also advanced to Sunday’s individual event finals. Yale’s Lindsay Chia (senior, Windsor, Ont.) and Texas Woman’s Daisy Woodring (junior, Bixby, Okla.) led all competitors on vault with a 9.850. Brown’s Mei Li Costa (senior, Lawrenceville, N.J.) topped the scoresheet on uneven bars with a 9.925. Southeast Missouri State’s Anna Kaziska (senior, Louisville, Ky.) posted the day’s high score on balance beam with a 9.950 and also garnered the top mark on floor exercise with a 9.900 – a feat she shared with Lindenwood’s Gayla Griswold (junior, Baton Rouge, La.) and Texas Woman’s Sierra Muns (freshman, Sicklerville, N.J.).

Individual event finalists are listed below alphabetically by apparatus. Reigning beam champion Kaziska and floor champion Texas Woman’s Isabel Goyco (senior, San Antonio, Texas) will look to defend their 2021 titles Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. ET.
