COLORADO SPRINGS, Nov. 8, 2013 – Four all-around champions, one for each age division (10-, 11-, 12-, and 13-year-old), were determined at the 2013 Future Stars National Championships at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The champions are: 10-year-old division – Ian Lasic-Ellis of NESA; 11-year-old division – Garrett Braunton of Black Hills Gymnastics; 12-year-old division – Brandon Briones of USA Youth Fitness Center; and 13-year-old division – Blake Wilson of SCEGA. Also, the 2013 Men’s National Coaches Workshop is held in conjunction with the Future Stars Championships.
In the 10-year-old division, Lasic-Ellis posted an 83.050 total to take top honors. Tegshmurun Jamiyankhuu of Lake Shore Academy was second at 81.650, finishing just ahead of Tyler Shimizu of Stanford Boys Gymnastics, who was third at 81.600.
Braunton won the all-around title for the 11-year-old division by earning 81.250 points. Evan Ng of Lake Shore Academy took second with 80.800. Rounding out the top three was Travis Wong of Universal, who tallied 80.650 points.
Briones, who won the 11-year-old division title in 2012, easily captured the 12-year-old top spot by scoring 83.950 points. Finishing in second place, Troy Jenkins of Black Hills Gymnastics posted 81.650 points, followed by Gavin LaRoche of USA Youth Fitness Center at 81.000.
Wilson captured the 13-year-old division title by posting 82.150 points. Daniel Clark of NESA took second with his 81.200. Third-place went to Dillon King of USA Gymnastics World, who finished with 80.500 points.
The Future Stars National Championships features the USA’s best 10-, 11-, 12- and 13-year-olds who perform special Future Stars competitive routines. Based on the results at the championships, USA Gymnastics identifies the Future Stars Developmental Team, which includes the top 16 gymnasts in both the 10- and 11-year-old divisions, 12 gymnasts in the 12-year-old division, and the top six gymnasts in the 13-year-old division. The top eight athletes in the 10- and 11-year-old divisions, the top six athletes in the 12-year-old division, and top three athletes in the 13-year-old division will be invited to a special Future Stars camp to be held at the USOTC next summer.
This year, 175 coaches are attending the National Coaches Workshop, the premier educational event for the men’s program. In addition to the competition, Future Stars athletes and their parents also participate in workshop activities that feature lectures, technical presentations, and hands-on coaching sessions. Presenters include Junior National Coaching Staff members, National Team coaches, sports science personnel, USOC staff and special guests.
The Future Stars program is designed is to identify talented athletes and to get them started on the right developmental path to national and international success. The program uses a special competitive routine format to evaluate the skill, strength and flexibility development of the athlete.
