Jaycie Phelps from Greenfield, Ind., leads the field after the women’s compulsory competition of the 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials-Gymnastics at the FleetCenter in Boston, Mass.
A crowd of 16,323 watched the 16-year-old Phelps earn an all-around score of 46.887 in the compulsory round to lead the field of 14 competitors after the first night. 1992 Olympic veterans Dominique Dawes, 19, of Silver Spring, Md., and Kerri Strug, 18, of Tucson, Ariz., are in second and third place, respectively.
“I feel more confident at Olympic Trials than at the National Championships, because training has been going very well,” Phelps said. “I know I have to do the routines the way I’ve been training them.”
1996 National Champion Shannon Miller, and 1995 National Champion Dominique Moceanu, have petitioned into the U.S. Olympic Trials-Gymnastics due to injuries. Miller has a nagging wrist injury and Moceanu has a stress fracture in her right tibia. Acccording to the Olympic selection procedures, the scores they each received from National Championships will stand as their scores for the Olympic Trials. If their scores hold in the top seven at the conclusion of the Olympic Trials then they will have earned one of the seven spots on the U.S. Olympic Team, pending USOC approval.
