2008 Olympic balance beam champion Shawn Johnson of West Des Moines, Iowa, and 1996 Olympic team gold-medalist Shannon Miller of Jacksonville, Fla., met with children at the University of Chicago Medical Center Comer Children’s Hospital on Oct. 16. They visited the hospital to promote advances in cancer treatment, early detection and prevention.

Johnson and Miller spent time on the pediatric cancer floor speaking with patients about their experiences competing at the Olympic Games, as well as answering questions. The visit was broadcast in patients’ rooms throughout the hospital. Children who were too sick to meet them in person spoke with the gold medalists on the phone.
