COTTBUS, Germany, April 15, 2008 – Kevin Tan of Fremont, Calif., won a silver medal on still rings at the World Cup held in Cottbus, Germany, April 11-13.

Tan, who trains with the Penn State team and is a member of Team Chevron, scored a 16.075 to finish second behind 2005 still rings world champion Yuri Van Gelder of the Netherlands, who scored a 16.625. The Ukraine’s Oleksandr Vorobyov placed third with a score of 15.925.

Tan also finished eighth on parallel bars. China’s Li Xiaopeng placed first with a 16.250, followed by Germany’s Fabian Hambuechen in second and Slovakia’s Samuel Piasecky in third with scores of 15.825 and 15.550, respectively.

Also competing for the USA but not advancing to the finals were Team Chevron’s Guillermo Alvarez of Denver and Sean Golden of Camden, N.J.

The other men’s champions were: Fabian Hambuechen of Germany, floor exercise; Krisztian Berki of Hungary, pommel horse; Oleksandr Yakubovskyi of the Ukraine, vault; and Zou Kai of China, horizontal bar.

The USA did not enter a women’s team, but the women’s champions were: Oksana Chusovitina of Germany, vault; He Kexin of China, uneven bars; Xiao Sha of China, balance beam; and Sandra Izbasa, floor exercise.
