DENVER, Colo. — Powered by gold-medal performances in vault and rings, Sean Townsend, Dallas, Texas, claimed the all-around title in the 16-18 age group junior competition at the 1997 John Hancock U.S. Gymnastics Championships, held Friday, Aug. 15, here at McNichols Arena.

Joining Townsend as a junior national champion was Raj Bhavsar, Houston, Texas, who earned the all-around crown in the 14-15 age group. With an 8.350 in still rings, Bhavsar posted the highest score in that event during the afternoon competition.
The event was used to select the respective age group teams. For the 16-18 age division, the team is comprised of Townsend, Yewki Tomita, Tucson, Ariz., Anthony Petrocelli, Brett McClure, Mill Creek, Wash., Scott Vetere, Pennsburg, Pa., Freddie Umali, San Jose, Calif., and Jonathan Plante, Roswell, Ga.
The 14-15 age group is includes Bhavsar, Michael Evans, Houston, Texas, Kristopher Zimmerman, Hubbard Woods, Ill., Matthew Abboud, Dayton, Maine, Shannon Carrion, Tallahassee, Fla., Everette Bierker, Bardonia, N.Y., and Duke Van Vleet, Safety Harbor, Fla.
