SAN JOSE, Calif. – Three days ago, USA Gymnastics unveiled a new mascot. On Sunday, the mascot was officially named: Flip.

USA Gymnastics President and CEO Li Li Leung introduced the mascot Thursday at the opening session of the USAG National Congress. Fans submitted name suggestions online through Saturday night, with the name revealed in-stadium Sunday night at the 2023 Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships at SAP Center.

Among nearly 1000 submissions, “Flip” was the most popular moniker for the friendly cat.

“Being a familiar gymnastics skill and a playful-sounding name, Flip seemed to really capture the essence of the mascot,” Leung said. “We look forward to welcoming Flip in-person at our events in 2024.”

The mascot naming came after a months-long development process that engaged fans and the gymnastics community. On March 21, a USAG social post asked “Out of all animals in the kingdom, which one do you think would make the best gymnast and why?” The overwhelming response – often with accompanying video or family pet photos – was a cat.

USA Gymnastics then developed multiple artistic renderings and engaged in market testing with fans, athletes, parents, and coaches to choose the final design. Featuring grey fur with white accents; red, white and blue hair; and wearing a red USA Gymnastics t-shirt and blue shorts, the cat is ready to welcome fans to gymnastics – and perform some skills itself.

Limited edition children’s apparel and stickers featuring the mascot are available at the USA Gymnastics merchandise booths in San Jose, and at usagymstore.com.

The “live” version of Flip will make its debut in 2024.
