Indianapolis – On June 22-24, gymnastics clubs from the United States and guest clubs from other countries will gather at SeaWorld Adventure Park in Orlando, Florida, for the 2001 National GymFest and TeamGymn Nationals.
“We are excited to work with SeaWorld-Orlando to host the 2001 National GymFest and TeamGymn Nationals” said Steve Whitlock, USA Gymnastics Group Gymnastics Director. “Orlando and SeaWorld offers a wonderful setting U.S. and international clubs to celebrate and enjoy Group Gymnastics activities.”
The GymFest is modeled after the World Gymnaestrada that is held every four years in the year preceding the Summer Olympic Games. Here, gymnastics clubs perform non-competitive group routines that feature a wide variety of gymnastics activities—artistic gymnastics, rhythmic, acro-sports, sport aerobics, trampoline and tumbling, pyramid building, dance and even cheerleading-type skills. “The 2001 GymFest represents the first opportunity for USA Clubs to show what they are preparing for the 2003 World Gymnaestrada that will be held in Lisbon, Portugal.”
“The finale of the GymFest will be the Gala Showcase on Sunday, June 24,” said Whitlock. “The Gala will be held on the stage of the spectacular Nautilus Theatre that provides full professional lighting and sound capabilities. The groups are really going to enjoy this opportunity. It will be a terrific show.”
TeamGymn is a competitive version of Group Gymnastics. Clubs compete with a squad of gymnasts in two events. “Team Jump” includes tumbling, vaulting and mini-trampoline. “Team Floor” features the entire club squad performing a single routine that includes tumbling, balancing, partner work, and dance. “TeamGymn is very popular in Europe, but is a new activity in the U.S. USA Gymnastics introduced TeamGymn here just over a year ago,” said Whitlock.
Whitlock noted, “We have already received inquires from clubs from Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Great Brit ian, Guatemala, Honduras, Israel, Mexico, Peru, Portugal, and Sweden. We believe that the participating USA clubs will truly enjoy the international flavor of this year’s event.”
