Andrea Schmid-Shapiro

Andrea (Bodo) Schmid-Shapiro defected to the United States from Hungary in 1956. A two-time Olympian for Hungary in gymnastics (receiving gold, silver, and bronze medals), Schmid-Shapiro was instrumental in the development of rhythmic gymnastics in the United States.

Over the years, she remained active by teaching and coaching the sport in addition to serving on the FIG Rhythmic Technical Committee (1984 to 2001) as its Secretary and Vice President, as a FIG brevet judge judging at four Olympic Games and conducting numerous judges courses throughout the world.

Schmid-Shapiro is an author and contributor to several books and articles on gymnastics and sports psychology. She earned her undergraduate degree in physical education and her doctorate in Higher Education/Teacher Education, both at the University of California in Berkeley. She served on the USA Gymnastics Executive Committee as the Vice Chair for Rhythmic and on the Board of Directors as a Rhythmic National Membership Director.
