Bruno Johnke

Before escaping Nazi Germany, then emigrating to the U.S. in 1949, Bruno Johnke’s career was seasoned and experienced. He coached, competed, and officiated internationally as a German gymnast but realized that the U.S. was a more suitable place to call his home.

Following his arrival in the US, Johnke coached at NYU and became involved in the national AAU program, where he translated French and German correspondences of the FIG as well as the first edition of the Code of Points. A worldly man, Johnke also went on to coach the Cuban Team to a Central American Games (later Pan American Games) Championship.
