During his 30 years at Stanford University, Sadao Hamada coached the men’s gymnastics team to three NCAA Championships during the 1990s. In 1989, he was named USA Gymnastics Coach of the Year. He also earned other Coach of the Year awards multiple times, including three from the NCAA, six conference, and two regional. Hamada coached Olympians Steve Hug and Jair Lynch, as well as nine individual NCAA champions.
