GUADALAJARA, Mexico, Dec. 4, 2010 – 2010 Pan Am champion Julie Zetlin of Bethesda, Md., won her second gold medal at the 2010 Pan American Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico, when she took top honors in the rope event final. Earlier, the United States won the team silver and qualified for both individual and group rhythmic gymnastics for the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, and now has won three total medals (two gold, one silver). Both Shelby Kisiel of Houston and Zetlin compete in the final two event finals tomorrow. The group competition is later today.
Zetlin, who trains at Capital Rhythmics, earned a 24.200 for her rope routine. Mexico’s Rut Castillo was second at 24.125 and Brazil’s Eliane Sampaio was third at 24.000. Kisiel, who trains at North Shore Rhythmic Gymnastics Center, posted a 22.425 for seventh place.
In hoop, Kisiel’s routine received a 23.550, and Zetlin tallied a 23.125 to finish fourth and fifth, respectively. Castillo was the gold medalist at 24.300, with Mexico’s Vero Navarro and Canada’s Mariam Chamilova taking second and third, respectively.
The U.S. group, which trains at North Shore Rhythmic in Buffalo Grove, Ill., and will compete later today, includes Jessica Bogdanov, Megan Frohlich, Michelle Przybylo, Sofya Roytburg, and Sydney Sachs.
Competition for the Pan Am Championships wraps up on Dec. 5 with individual event finals for ball and ribbon and group (three ribbon/two rope) at 6 p.m. local time.
