Blaine Wilson from Ohio State University won the all-around title at the 1996 Coca-Cola National Gymnastics Championships. Wilson said, “I came in to do as well as I could and I’m glad things turned out the way they did.”
Wilson was followed by four-time USA National Champion John Roethlisberger from the University of Minnesota. Roethlisberger said, “I knew coming in that Blaine was one heck of a gymnast.”
When asked if he was disappointed to have lost his title, Roethlisberger said, “Yes and no. Coming into this meet I wanted to establish myself and I did. I think if I didn’t feel a little disappointed there would be something wrong with me.”
Roethlisberger was followed by the U.S. Olympic Training Center’s John Macready.
The top 14 men will make up the USA National Team and will advance to the U.S. Olympic Trials-Gymnastics in Boston, Mass., June 27-30.
The top six in each event, using optional scores only, will advance to the event finals on Sat., June 8.
