HARTFORD, Conn., June 3, 2016 – Donnell Whittenburg of Baltimore, Md./Team Hilton (U.S. Olympic Training Center), posted an 89.900 total for the highest all-around score on the first night of the 2016 P&G Men’s Gymnastics Championships at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. The final day of men’s competition is Sunday, June 5, at 1 p.m. ET. Competition continues tomorrow with the women’s Secret U.S. Classic. Junior women start the day at 1 p.m. ET, with the senior women at 7:00 p.m. ET.

Sam Mikulak of Newport Coast, Calif./Team Hilton (U.S. Olympic Training Center), was second with an 89.850, followed by Chris Brooks of Houston/Team Hilton (U.S. Olympic Training Center) in third at 89.500. Jake Dalton of Sparks, Nev./Team Hilton (University of Oklahoma), finished fourth (89.400), with Yul Moldauer of Arvada, Colo./University of Oklahoma, in fifth (89.250). Scores from both days of competition count equally.

Performances in Hartford will determine the men’s senior national champions and national team, as well as the 18 men who will advance to the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Men’s Gymnastics in St. Louis, June 23 and 25. The Secret U.S. Classic, which has athletes competing on the junior and senior levels, serves as the last opportunity for female gymnasts to qualify for the P&G Women’s Championships in St. Louis (June 24 and 26), as well as a tune-up for many of the country’s top women leading into their national championships.

The remaining competition schedule is: P&G Championships – June 5 at 1 p.m.; and Secret U.S. Classic – June 4 at 1 p.m. for juniors and 7 p.m. for seniors.

This is the first time the men’s and women’s national championships have been held separately since 2008. The XL Center staged the national men’s and women’s gymnastics championships in both 2010 and 2013, but the Secret U.S. Classic is making its first visit to Hartford.
