SEATTLE, Wash., April 7, 2017 – Majesta Valentine of West Chester University, won the all-around title at the 2017 USA Gymnastics Women’s Collegiate National Championships at Seattle (Wash.) Pacific University’s Brougham Pavilion. The four teams competing in the team finals on Saturday, April 8, at 7 p.m. PT are: Cornell University, Lindenwood University (defending team champion), Texas Woman’s University and University of Bridgeport. Competition wraps up on Sunday, April 9, with the individual event finals at 1 p.m. PT.
Valentine clinched the all-around crown with her 39.200. Cornell’s Lyanda Dudley edged out Bridgeport’s Maya Reimers, 39.075 to 39.025, for second. Rounding out the top five were Bridgeport’s Kelsey Campbell (39.000) and Brown University’s Jorden Mitchell (38.825).
Both Lindenwood and Bridgeport are favored for this year’s title, entering the championships with matching RQS marks of 194.440. Defending team champion Lindenwood won its second-straight USA Gymnastics Collegiate title last season by less than .100 last year. Bridgeport won six consecutive USA Gymnastics Women’s Collegiate Championships from 2009-2014.
Bridgeport topped the team standings in the first session with a 195.575 total. Cornell was second at 194.200. West Chester University tallied a 193.525 for third, with the U.S. Air Force Academy in fourth at 192.800.
Lindenwood earned the chance to defend it team title by scoring a 195.100 in the second session. Texas Women’s took the second with a 194.250. Host Seattle Pacific University was third, followed by Yale University (192.975) and Brown University (192.225) for fourth and fifth, respectively.
The nine schools that entered the team competition are Brown University, Cornell University, Lindenwood University, Seattle Pacific University, Texas Woman’s University, U.S. Air Force Academy, University of Bridgeport, West Chester University and Yale University. Schools with athletes competing for an event or all-around title only are: Centenary College, Southern Connecticut State University, and University of Pennsylvania.
The top two teams from each session advanced to Saturday’s team finals at 7 p.m. The top five individuals for each event from each of the two Friday sessions qualified for the individual finals, scheduled for Sunday, April 10, at 1 p.m. Tickets are $15 for a day pass, or $30 for an all-event pass.
The USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships is for Division I, II and III schools with less than seven-and-a-half full scholarships.
