2000 Olympic Team Members Wilson and Townsend Scheduled to Compete
Indianapolis, Ind. – Nearly 100 of the nation’s top male gymnasts will gather in Las Vegas for the Winter Cup Challenge, Feb. 9-10 at the Pepsi AllSport Arena in their first attempt to compete the new Code of Points. Three spots on the national team on the line.
Highlighting the competition are members of the 2000 Olympic Team, including Blaine Wilson (Columbus, Ohio), a five-time national champion and 1996 Olympian, and Sean Townsend (Houston, Texas), a member of the 1999 World Championships Team. Wilson finished sixth in the all-around competition at the 2000 Olympic Games, the highest U.S. finish ever in a non-boycotted Olympics.
Also expected to compete are 1997 World Championships Team Members Jason Gatson (Mesa, Ariz.) and Mike Dutka (Fairless Hills, Pa.), and 2000 Junior National Champion Todd Thornton (Houston, Texas).
The 2001 Winter Cup will feature collegiate stars from Ohio State University, Penn State University, Stanford University, University of California-Berkeley, University of Illinois, University of Massachusetts, University of Michigan, University of Minnesota, University of Oklahoma and University of Washington. Among the collegiate competitors is Raj Bhavsar (Ohio State University/Houston, Texas) who participated in the 2000 Olympic Team Trials last August.
Three spots on the 2000-2001 U.S. National Team are up for grabs at Winter Cup. All six 2000 Olympic Team members earned a guaranteed spot on the team for an entire year based on their desire to continue training for the 2001 World Championships.

 

Winter Cup Challenge Schedule

Feb. 9 – Preliminary All-Around and Individual Event Finals
Session I – 3:00-5:00 p.m.
Session II – 7:00-9:00 p.m.

Feb. 10 – All Around Finals: Top 36 from Preliminary All-Around
Session III – 8:00-10:00 p.m.
