COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., March 21, 2015 – Josh Ramos of Broken Arrow, Okla./U.S. Air Force Academy, won three individual event medals on the final day of the USA Gymnastics Men’s Collegiate National Championships at the U.S. Air Force Academy’s Cadet Field House located north of Colorado Springs, Colo. Ramos and Michael Deitz of Manassas, Va./College of William & Mary, were named the Varsity Division’s co-Gymnasts of Year, and the Collegiate Club Division Gymnast of the Year was Franklin Stutevoss of Portland, Ore./University of Washington.
USAF’s Kip Simons was recognized as the Varsity Division Coach of the Year, and Air Force’s Jeff Robinson and Josh Loeser were named Varsity Division Assistant Coaches of the Year. Arizona State University cornered the Collegiate Club Division coaching honors: Scot Barclay, Coach of the Year; and Rob Survick and Evan Shaw, Assistant Coach of the Year.
Ramos won the floor exercise title (15.100), the parallel bars silver (14.600) and horizontal bar bronze (14.600). Arizona State’s Daniel Bronnenberg of Pleasanton, Calif., claimed the vault silver medal (15.050) and the floor bronze medal (14.550). Mitchell Larios of Frisco, Texas/U.S. Naval Academy, was the floor silver medalist (15.050).
For pommel horse, Tim Wang of Riverside, Calif./U.S. Air Force Academy, took top honors at 15.000. Jon Zirna of Buffalo, N.Y./Springfield College, edged by Jason Wang of Tigard, Ore./College of William & Mary, 14.650-14.500.
Denis Aurelius of Plain City, Ohio/U.S. Air Force Academy, posted a 15.400 to win the still rings title. Teammate Fletcher Braunton of Olympia, Wash., took second at 14.800, followed by Nicholas Kano of Temple City, Calif./University of Washington, with 14.650.
Josh Pyne of Las Vegas, Nev. /U.S. Air Force Academy, earned a 14.700 and first place on vault. Bronnenberg slipped by Justin Rowen of Rocklin, Calif./University of Washington, 14.550 to 14.500.
The parallel bars gold went to Greg Chaput of Worcester, Mass./U.S. Air Force Academy, with 14.650. Douglass Johnson of Los Angeles/Southern California United, was the bronze medalist at 14.500.
Only one-tenth-of-a-point separated the medalists for the horizontal bar. William & Mary’s Michael Deitz of Manassas, Va., notched a 14.600 for the top spot. Jonathan Tang of Malvern, Pa./U.S. Naval Academy, was right behind him at 14.500, followed by Ramos at 14.400.
At the men’s USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships, the team and all-around competitions are divided into two categories, varsity and collegiate club. The varsity competition is for Division I, II or III, four-year institutions with gymnastics as a varsity sport that provide two or less full scholarships as well as the military academies, and the collegiate team category is for two-year or four-year degree-granting schools with gymnastics as a club sport. The individual event finals feature gymnasts from both the varsity and collegiate club divisions.
