YOKOHAMA, Japan, Sept. 23, 2009 –The USA’s Sophina DeJesus of Temecula, Calif., won the floor exercise gold medal at the 2009 Junior Japan International Competition on Sept. 23 in Yokohama, Japan. Teammates John Orozco of Bronx, N.Y., earned the still rings silver, and Briley Casanova of Dallas, Texas, claimed the uneven bars bronze.

Dejesus, who trains at SCEGA, won the women’s floor exercise with a 14.300. Japan’s Mai Murakami was second (14.050) and Russia’s Viktoriya Komova came in third (13.850). DeJesus, who qualified for all-four event finals, also finished fourth on uneven bars (13.625) and fifth on vault (13.800) and balance beam (13.150).

WOGA’s Casanova scored a 13.900 for place third on the uneven bars. Komova won the event title with a 15.050, and Japan’s Natsumi Sasada was second with a 14.300. Casanova also finished fourth on balance beam (13.350) and eighth on vault (13.025) and floor exercise (12.375).

In the men’s competition, World Cup Gymnastics’ Orozco scored a 14.600 to earn the silver medal on still rings. Ryuzo Sejima of Japan took top honors (14.750), while Great Britain’s Reiss Beckford finished third (14.450). Orozco qualified for five event finals, finishing tied for fourth on parallel bars (14.100), sixth on pommel horse (13.550) and vault (15.200), and seventh on floor (14.150).

The USA’s Jake Dalton of Sparks, Nev./University of Oklahoma, also qualified for five event finals. He finished fifth on floor (14.650) and vault (15.450); tied for fifth on rings (14.200); sixth on horizontal bar (13.500), and eighth on parallel bars (13.400).
