INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Oct. 1, 2008 – Below is USA Gymnastics’ statement regarding the International Gymnastics Federation’s (FIG) announcement today that it has completed its investigation into the ages of gymnasts on the Chinese team who competed at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and has confirmed that they were age eligible based on official government documents. The findings have been provided to the International Olympic Committee.

However, the FIG is continuing its investigation into the ages of Chinese gymnasts Dong Fangxiao and Yang Yun, who were members of the Chinese squad at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.

"USA Gymnastics is very proud of the performances of our gymnasts in Beijing, winning 10 gymnastics medals. Our athletes demonstrated both on and off the field of play why they are champions through their dedication, character and esprit de corps," said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics. "We applaud the serious efforts of the International Gymnastics Federation and International Olympic Committee to conduct an investigation given the level of speculation that existed. We believe the continuing investigation regarding the evidence from the Olympic Games in Sydney underscores the importance of maintaining a fair field of play and identifying methods to prevent questions of this nature in the future."
