USA Gymnastics announces 2020 All-Americans, Coaches of the Year and Outstanding Senior awards for USA Gymnastics Men’s Collegiate Nationals

Following an abbreviated 2020 men’s collegiate gymnastics season, which was cut short due to concerns over the spread of coronavirus, USA Gymnastics today announced All-American selections, Coaches of the Year and Outstanding Senior awards.

INDIANAPOLIS, April 2, 2020 – Following an abbreviated 2020 men’s collegiate gymnastics season, which was cut short due to concerns over the spread of coronavirus, USA Gymnastics today announced All-American selections, Coaches of the Year and Outstanding Senior awards.

These individuals represent two institutional categories, Varsity and Collegiate. Varsity schools are DI, DII or DIII, four-year colleges and universities whose programs are designated varsity sports and who provide athletic scholarship funds up to the equivalent of two full out-of-state athletic scholarships. The military academies are also included in the Varsity category. Collegiate schools are two- or four-year degree-granting institutions whose gymnastics programs are not operated as varsity sports but are instead club sports.

While All-American selections are typically based on results from the USA Gymnastics Men’s Collegiate National Championships, given the truncated conclusion to the 2020 season, this year’s honorees were determined based on cumulative performance results tracked through rankings found on the Collegiate Gymnastics Association’s “Road to Nationals” website, the official statistical platform for reporting meet scores throughout the season.

The top-six all-around gymnasts in each category and the top-six individual-event finishers from the categories combined were named All-Americans.

Coach of the Year honors are voted on by the head coaches of the participating institutions. Kip Simons, U.S. Naval Academy, was named Varsity Coach of the Year, and Craig Holt and Colin Payne, also from the U.S. Naval Academy, were named Varsity Assistant Coaches of the Year. Scott Barclay, Arizona State University, was named Collegiate Coach of the Year, and Fabricio Olsson, Northern California United, was name Collegiate Assistant Coach of the Year.

This year’s Outstanding Senior Gymnasts were also determined by the head coaches of the participating institutions. Recipients must be in at least their fourth year as student-athletes. Stephen Lewis from Springfield College was named the 2020 Outstanding Senior gymnast in the Varsity category, while Benjamin Bloom from the University of Washington earned Outstanding Senior Gymnast recognition in the Collegiate category.

USA Gymnastics also announced this year’s Scholar Athletes. These are gymnasts in their third or fourth year of eligibility who possess a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 at the end of the first semester of the academic year in which the award is being presented.
