Tiana Sumanasekera (Pleasanton, Calif./World Champions Centre) made her senior debut at the Pan American Championships one to remember, taking the all-around title, balance beam gold and floor silver to lead the Americans’ eight-medal haul on Saturday. Teammate Joscelyn Roberson (Spring, Texas/World Champions Centre) added three medals of her own.

After winning four gold medals and one silver in 2022 Junior Pan Am junior competition, Sumanasekera led all competitors in this year’s senior division with a 53.900 to take all-around gold ahead of Mexico’s Natalia Escalera Cárdenas (53.266) and Canada’s Aurelie Tran (52.867) in second and third. Sumanasekera also won beam with a 13.767 and was second on floor with a 13.567. She scored a 12.633 on uneven bars and a 13.933 on vault.

In individual event competition, Roberson added three more medals to her international medal case, taking floor gold (14.100) and winning silver on vault (13.583) and beam (13.267). Nola Matthews (Gilroy, Calif./Airborne Gymnastics Training Center) and Addison Fatta (Wrightsville, Pa./Prestige Gymnastics) went first and second on bars with scores of 14.000 and 13.667. Matthews also finished fourth in the all-around with a 52.267 and was eighth on beam with a 12.700, while Fatta was fifth on vault with a 13.100. Madray Johnson (Dallas, Texas/WOGA Gymnastics) was seventh on beam with a 12.833 and ninth on bars with a 13.133. Johnson replaced teammate Zoe Miller (Spring, Texas/World Champions Centre) in competition after Miller sustained a concussion during training.

The U.S. women’s team will appear in Sunday’s team final as top qualifier with a combined score of 162.167. Mexico’s women’s team qualified in second with a 159.099 and Canada rounded out the top three with a 155.768. Also qualified to the team final are Brazil, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Colombia and Panama.

The final day of the 2023 Pan American Championships begins Sunday with men’s team competition at 11:30 a.m. ET, followed by the women at 5:05 p.m. ET. Official results will be available on the PAGU Twitter page and live streaming can be found here.
