Indianapolis, Ind.- The U.S. men were victorious over China and Romania at the 2001 Pontiac American Team Cup, this evening at the Neal Blaisdell Center in Honolulu. The U.S. finished with 220.675 while China finished second with 215.000 and Romania finished third with 210.000.

“Our guys fought really hard from start to finish,” said head coach Kevin Mazeika. “It was our plan to always fight and we did very well.”
The U.S. men won five of six events including the floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, vault (tie with China), and parallel bars. Romania won high bar.
2000 Olympian Sean Townsend earned the highest all-around score of the evening with 55.900. Townsend was followed by Paul Hamm with 54.800 and Morgan Hamm with 53.900.
The top floor exercise score was a 9.5, earned by both Mike Dutka and Morgan Hamm. The pommel horse winner was LI Rongjie of China with 9.5. The top still rings score was a 9.55, awarded to both Sean Townsend and XIE Jianhui. The highest vault score was a 9.75 awarded to Marian Dragulescu. The top parallel bars score came from Townsend with a 9.5. The highest score of the evening on high bar was awarded to Brett McClure with 9.625.

Each team consisted of six athletes. Five athletes competed on each individual apparatus and the top four scores counted. The team with the highest point total was named overall team champion.
