TOKYO, July 24, 2021 – On the first day of gymnastics competition at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, the U.S. men’s artistic gymnastics team – comprised of Brody Malone of Belfast, Tenn., Sam Mikulak of Newport Coast, Calif., Yul Moldauer of Wellington, Colo., and Shane Wiskus of Spring Park, Minn. – advanced to Monday’s team final, earning a combined 256.761 Saturday night at the Ariake Gymnastics Centre. The U.S. team finished fourth, qualifying behind Japan, China and the Russian Olympic Committee. They will look to break into the top three when they return to action in next week’s medal round.

Malone and Mikulak also earned spots in the all-around final, which will be held Wednesday, July 28. Malone led the way for the U.S. with the eleventh-highest all-around score (85.298), while Mikulak was 14th (84.664). However, because only two athletes per country may advance to the finals, Malone was the ninth athlete to qualify while Mikulak was the 10th.

Individual event finalists were also determined based on Saturday’s competition. Pommel horse specialist Alec Yoder of Indianapolis, Ind., who was selected to the additional +1 country quota spot at the conclusion of last month’s Olympic Team Trials, posted a 15.200 to secure a spot in the final. Moldauer earned a berth in the floor exercise final with a 14.866 on the night, while Malone’s 14.533 on horizontal bar landed him a spot in the event final. Mikulak, who is competing in his third Olympic Games, will also have a shot at an individual medal on parallel bars after delivering a 15.433 in qualifications.

The U.S. women will look to qualify for finals on Sunday, beginning at 2:10 a.m. ET. A full event schedule for the remaining men’s and women’s artistic competitions is listed below in eastern time.
