Team USA swept the 1995 Visa Challenge in Fairfax, Va., April 28, winning the men’s and women’s team competitions and all-around competitions. Dominique Moceanu captured the women’s all-around title while Bill Roth won the men’s all- around competition. U.S. gymnasts Katie Teft and Chainey Umphrey also captured bronze medals in their respective all-around competitions.

In the women’s team competition, Belarus finished second and China took third. For the men, China finished second and Belarus placed third. China’s Meng Fei took the silver medal in the women’s all-around while Vitaly Rudnitsky from Belarus took second in men’s all-around.

Moceanu commented, “It (the competition) was great! It was really fun, and I liked it.” On her expectations coming into the competition she commented, “I was training hard and wanted to do well.”

When asked about his performance tonight, Roth said, “This pretty much sums up my career. When people think I’m down and out, I always seem to come back on top.”

Bronze all-around medalist Teft commented on the U.S. team’s performance and depth saying, “We work really well together because we’re like a great big family.”

1994 National Champion Dominique Dawes did not compete in all four events because she had not had quite enough time to recover from a foot injury she incurred in January. A major contributor to the team’s gold medal, she won the uneven bars and balance beam events and placed third on vault, but she did not compete on floor exercise.

“We did a really good job. We had a few falls, and it’s great that we could pick ourselves up and show the gymnastics world the power of our positive attitudes,” explained Dawes.

Belarussian Svetlana Boguinskaia, 1989 World Champion and two-time Olympian, led the all-around coming into Friday’s competition, but a fall on her first tumbling pass on floor exercise put her in fourth place at the end of the night.
