INDIANAPOLIS, Feb. 20, 2013 – In 2012, USA Gymnastics funneled more than $4.2 million in direct cash payments to its athletes.
The monies disbursed included direct support through training stipends and Olympic performance bonuses from Operation Gold, funded by both USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic Committee; event honorariums; prize money; sponsor-related activities; and participation in the Kellogg’s Tour of Gymnastics Champions.
"The Olympic year provides a unique opportunity for our athletes to capitalize financially," said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics. "Over the years, we have worked closely with the USOC, our corporate partners, and other avenues to increase the support we provide our athletes, while still protecting the eligibility for those involved in collegiate gymnastics.
The amount each athlete received depended on a variety of factors, including success on the field of play; protecting NCAA eligibility; and participation in the Kellogg’s Tour.
"USA Gymnastics is proud of the funding provided to the athletes, especially returning 90% of its share of the Kellogg’s Tour profits to the athletes involved and the Olympic Team coaches," said Penny.
The $4.2 million-plus does not include other athlete support provided by USA Gymnastics, such as airfare, national team apparel, training camps, coaches’ support, and/or marketing-related agreements directly between the athletes and an individual sponsor.
