Both the U.S. men’s and women’s teams claimed gold Sunday to close out the 2023 Pan American Championships in grand style. The U.S. delegation earned a total of 20 medals across three days competition in Medellin.

Sunday began with the men’s team of Taylor Christopulos (Layton, Utah/University of Nebraska), Yul Moldauer (Arvada, Colo./5280 Gymnastics), Curran Phillips (Naperville, Ill./Stanford University), Shane Wiskus (Spring Park, Minn./EVO Gymnastics) and Khoi Young (Bowie, Md./Stanford University) taking team gold with a combined 247.499. The team successfully defended its 2022 Pan Am title, finishing nearly 10 points ahead of second-place Canada, who scored a 238.599 overall. The men’s team from Brazil landed third on the podium with a 234.901 and host-country Colombia was fourth with a total of 234.100. Argentina’s men’s team rounded out the top five with a 231.333.

All-around champion Moldauer notched the highest scores of the team on floor exercise (14.100), still rings (14.133) and parallel bars (14.200). Young was top scorer on pommel horse (14.467), Phillips on horizontal bar (14.400) and Christopulos on vault (14.333).

Later that afternoon, the U.S. women’s team claimed gold for the first time since 2018. The team of Addison Fatta (Wrightsville, Pa./Prestige Gymnastics), Madray Johnson (Dallas, Texas/WOGA Gymnastics), Nola Matthews (Gilroy, Calif./Airborne Gymnastics Training Center), Joscelyn Roberson (Spring, Texas/World Champions Centre) and Tiana Sumanasekera (Pleasanton, Calif./World Champions Centre) topped the podium with an overall 163.700. The Mexican women’s team was second with a 154.698 and Canada third with a 150.998. Argentina placed fourth with a 146.467 and Brazil was fifth with a 146.234.

Sumanasekera, who claimed all around gold on Saturday, posted the team’s high scores on vault (14.233) and balance beam (13.967). Roberson and Matthews put up a pair of 14.067s to lead American performances on floor and uneven bars, respectively.
