MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., April 17, 2009 – Stanford University won its fourth national NCAA men’s team title by posting a total score of 362.800 at the 2009 National Collegiate Men’s Gymnastics Championships held at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. The University of Oklahoma’s Steven Legendre, a member of the U.S. senior national team, won the all-around title with a six-event score of 90.500. Individual event finals are on Saturday, April 18, at 7 p.m. ESPN2 will broadcast coverage of the men’s national championships on April 23 at 3 p.m. ET.

In the team competition, the University of Michigan slipped ahead of the University of Oklahoma to take second place, 361.500 to 361.200. The University of California – Berkeley, University of Illinois and Ohio State University finished fourth through sixth, respectively. This is Stanford’s first team title since 1995, and Stanford is the first school other than Penn State or Oklahoma to win the coveted team crown since 2001.

Stanford had the highest team score on still rings at 61.800 and parallel bars at 59.300. Oklahoma had the top team tallies for floor exercise (62.275) and vault (64.050), with Michigan and Illinois tied for the honors on the horizontal bar (59.250).

In the all-around, Legendre was 0.500 ahead of Cal’s Glen Ishino (90.000) and a point in front of bronze medalist Paul Ruggeri of the University of Illinois (89.500).

Legendre earned the high score on the floor exercise at 16.000 and tied on vault with Iowa’s Geoff Reins at 16.300, the evening’s highest score. The remaining best apparatus scores were: Daniel Ribeiro, Illinois, pommel horse, 15.500; Bryant Hadden, Stanford, and Evan Roth, California, still rings, 15.550; Sho Nakamori, Stanford, parallel bars, 15.200; and Ruggeri, horizontal bar, 15.750.

Single-session tickets are on sale now through the University of Minnesota Athletics Department. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the ticket office at Mariucci Arena, over the phone by calling 612-624-8080 or 800-UGOPHER, or online at www.gophersports.com. On competition days, tickets may be purchased at the Sports Pavilion ticket window. Single-session tickets are priced at $15 for adults and $8 for students. Special single-session packages for groups of 15 or more are also available and are priced at $5 per ticket.
