SPRINGFIELD, Mass., March 23, 2011 – The U.S. Air Force Academy and Arizona State University are looking to defend their Varsity and Collegiate Club Division titles, respectively, at the 2011 USA Gymnastics Men’s Collegiate Championships at Springfield (Mass.) College’s Blake Arena, March 25-26. Five schools are entered in the Varsity Division, with five participating in the Collegiate Club Division.

At the men’s USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships, the team and all-around competition are divided into two categories, varsity and collegiate. The varsity competition is for Division II and III schools with gymnastics as a varsity sport and the military academies, and the collegiate team category is for two-year or four-year degree-granting schools with gymnastics as a club sport. The individual event finals combine the two divisions into one.

The schools in this year’s field are: Varsity – College of William and Mary, Springfield College, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy and U.S. Military Academy; and Collegiate Club Division – Arizona State University, College at Brockport, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Portland Community College and University of Washington.

The competition begins on March 25 at 6:30 p.m. with the team and all-around finals, followed by individual event finals on March 26 at 7 p.m.

Last year, the Air Force Academy topped then defending champion William and Mary, which has won 13 team titles since first competing in the event in 1994. Arizona State captured the club team title for the fourth straight year and 13th overall since first competing in the event in 1987.

In the all-around, Nash Mills of the U.S. Air Force Academy and Riley Barclay of ASU are returning to defend their varsity and club titles, respectively. For the individual events, five of the six event titlists are competing this year – Dylan Parrott of the Navy, floor exercise and horizontal bar; Steve Deutsch of William and Mary, still rings; Deven Menefee of Air Force, vault; and Mills, parallel bars.
