Los Angeles, Calif., April 19, 2013 – Bridget Sloan won the all-around title tonight at the 2013 NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championships at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles. Tonight’s competition also served as the qualification round with six teams advancing to the Super Six team finals on Saturday and the top four gymnasts on each event from each session advancing to the individual event finals on Sunday.
The top three teams from each session – University of Florida, Louisiana State University, University of Georgia, University of Alabama, University of California – Los Angeles, and University of Oklahoma – qualified for the Super Six, scheduled for April 20 at 4 p.m. Today’s sessions also determined the gymnasts who will advance to the individual event finals on April 21 at 1 p.m. All times are Pacific.
In the first session of the day, Florida had the top score posting a 197.775. LSU was close behind with a 197.325. Georgia rounded out the top three with a score of 197.150. Florida had the highest team scores on bars and beam with 49.525 and 49.475, respectively. LSU had the highest vault and floor scores with a 49.500 and 49.350, respectively.
In the second session, Alabama won the session with a score of 197.350. UCLA and Oklahoma tied for second with a score of 197.200. UCLA had the highest score on vault, 49.500, and shared the highest score on floor exercise with Alabama with a 49.450. Alabama scored a 49.275 on beam, which was the highest team score on that event. Oklahoma had the high score on uneven bars with a 49.500.
In the all-around competition, Sloan turned in an incredible all-around of 39.600 complete with a 9.875 on her Yurchenko full vault, a 9.925 on bars, and a score of 9.900 on both beam and floor to win the title. LSU’s Rheagan Courville finished second with 39.575. There was a four-way tie for third place scoring 39.525 between Florida’s Marissa King, Michigan’s Katie Zurales and Joanna Sampson and Nebraska’s Emily Wong.
The top four gymnasts from each session in the individual event rankings, plus ties, advance to the finals.
In 2012, Alabama won its sixth team title with a score of 197.850. University of Florida was second with a 197.775 and the University of California – Los Angeles was third with a 197.750.
