MESA, Ariz., May 11, 2022 – The second-annual USA Gymnastics Men’s and Women’s Development Program National Championships kick off Thursday and will run through Sunday at Bell Bank Park in Mesa, Ariz. Over the course of the four-day event, more than 1,600 athletes, who represent the top-tier of developing artistic gymnastics talent in the U.S., will compete across the women’s Level 10, men’s Junior National Level 10 and men’s Junior Elite Level 8, 9 and 10 divisions.

All-around and apparatus titles will be awarded in each division. A women’s regional Super Team champion will be determined based on performances over the weekend, while the men’s Junior National Level 10 regional champion will be crowned in a special session Thursday night. Club titles are also up for grabs on the men’s side. The top clubs at each level – Junior Elite Levels 8 and 9 and Junior Elite and Junior National combined Level 10 – will be recognized.

Participating athletes advanced to the national championships, which serve as the culmination of the Development Program competitive season for both the men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics disciplines, from regional championships held earlier in the year. The 2022 USAG Collegiate GymACT Championships, a collegiate men’s competition, will be held Saturday, May 14 in conjunction with the event. An opening ceremony at Tixr Yard adjacent to Bell Bank Park will close out the first day of men’s competition. The two-hour program, slated to begin at 6 p.m. local time, will feature a parade of athletes, appearances from 2020 Olympians Jade Carey and Shane Wiskus, an interactive panel on NCAA recruiting and a live performance from a special musical guest.

Men’s Development Program National Championships

Levels in the men’s program are determined by age and skill proficiency. Level 8 encompasses gymnasts in the 11-12-year-old range, while Level 9 competitors are 13-14 years of age. Level 10 is split into two age groups: 16-17 and 18-19.

Based on their performances, Junior Elite gymnasts from Levels 8 and 9 may earn spots on the Men’s Level 8/9 Junior National Team, which will be named at the event’s conclusion. Junior Elite Level 10 athletes will look to qualify for the 2022 U.S. Gymnastics Championships, scheduled for August 18-21 in Tampa, Fla., after which the Level 10 Junior National Team will be announced.

Women’s Development Program National Championships

Women’s divisions are determined by age, spanning six junior and six senior groups designated A-F. The top-four all-around gymnasts in each division will be named to the 2022 USA Gymnastics Development Program National Team and will be invited to attend a national training camp in July in Texas.

In 2022, athletes who did not earn regional team berths had the opportunity to qualify to a brand new Wildcard Competition session, which will kick off the action on the women’s side Friday evening. Nearly 150 gymnasts will take part in the inaugural competition after receiving invitations based on their Regional Championship performances.
