DALLAS, Texas, Aug. 12, 2009 – John Orozco of the Bronx, N.Y., and Cameron Rogers of Mint Hill, N.C., won the 14-15 and 16-18, respectively, junior men’s U.S. all-around titles at the 2009 Visa Championships at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.
Orozco, who trains at World Cup, won his third straight junior all-around crown with a 86.850 total. He also won the individual titles for the floor exercise (14.600), pommel horse (14.700), still rings (14.550), parallel bars (14.200) and horizontal bar (14.150). Sam Mikulak of Newport Coast, Calif./SCATS HB, was second in the all-around at 83.500, and Jake Martin of Oviedo, Fla./Orlando Metro, was third at 81.050.
Orozco took the lead after the first rotation, with his 14.700 on pommel horse, and never let go. His horizontal bar routine included a clean layout Tkatchev and layout double twisting double back dismount. He finished with a strong floor routine that included a piked double-Arabian mount, layout Thomas, one-and-a-half to punch layout front, a tucked double Arabian, and a two-and-a-half dismount.
"I can’t even describe how I feel right now,” said Orozco. “I’m so happy. It wasn’t my best competition but how can I not be happy? I tried a new vault, a front handspring double full twist, and I touched my hand. I was pleased overall winning five events and the all-around. I hold myself to a high standard. My goal is to make the senior team this year."
For the 16-18 year old division, Rogers won the title with an 82.150 total score. Rogers, who trains at Zenith, posted the highest scores on still rings (13.900) and parallel bars (14.250). Jesse Silverstein of Spring Valley, N.Y., took second with an 82.100, and Christopher Turner of Fremont, Calif., finished third at 81.850. The remaining individual event titlists are: Parker Raque of Louisville, Ky./Champion Gym, floor exercise (14.300); Dylan Akers of Houston, Texas/Cypress Academy, pommel horse (13.850); Mackenzie Dow of Cranford, N.J./Surgent’s Elite and Zachary Chase of Woodinville, Wash./Cascade Elite, vault (tie at 15.300); Jordan Valdez of Louisville, Colo./Xtreme Altitude, horizontal bar (13.700).
"I’m definitely happy,” said Rogers. “Winning was my goal and I accomplished that. Last year I placed fifth all-around in the junior 14-15 year old division. I did a new vault today, a Yurchenko double full. I did it on the hard surface yesterday for the first time, so I was very pleased with vault."
The men’s 16-18 year-old division was not so clear cut as the 14-15 division. The lead bounced around between Akers and Silverstein. Rogers was tied for fourth at 67.900 going into the final rotation; Silverstein was in the lead at 68.600 and Turner was second at 68.500. Rogers’ parallel bars score of 14.250, which was the highest in his division, put him into first place. Silverstein finished on pommel horse, where he got a 13.500, to finish second. Turner’s high bar routine that included a gienger and and a layout full twisting double back dismount earned a 13.350 to land him in third overall.
