The final two Rhythmic camps of 2018 have finished up successfully at the Lake Placid Olympic Training Center (OTC). From November 28-December 3, USA Gymnastics welcomed a record 70 gymnasts along with 18 coaches for the Rhythmic Open Camp! This was followed by a National Team Camp on December 4-8 for gymnasts born 2003-2005. It was a productive 10 days of collaboration and learning for all.

This year’s Rhythmic Open Camp theme was “All About Group!”. Each activity was centered around group skills to grow the group discipline in the United States and prepare coaches for the inclusion of group with the level 4 program for all clubs starting in 2021. The camp included apparatus technique, focused on collaborations and exchanges; a wide variety of dance styles incorporating partner work and formations; strength/conditioning with teamwork and formation changes; ballet; communication strategies from a sports psychology perspective; and plenty of group relays and games. Each participant was encouraged to apply what they learned and use their creativity to choreograph a short group routine with their partners. Coaches participated alongside the athletes, even choreographing and performing routines for the end of camp show!

During the National Team Camp, athletes and their coaches worked closely with judges to check their routines for the upcoming season. They also devoted time to ballet, strength/conditioning, and sports psychology sessions. These camps were a great end to the year and left coaches and athletes energized and excited for 2019.
