INDIANAPOLIS (September 30, 2022) – USA Gymnastics Athletes’ Council chair Jessica Renteria has been elected to the USA Gymnastics Board as a Combined Athlete Director, USAG announced Friday.

A former Junior and Senior Acrobatic National Team member, Renteria – with partner Maren Merwarth – was part of the first U.S. senior women’s pair to medal at a FIG World Cup event. After retiring from competitive gymnastics, she remained involved the acro community, taking on multiple roles in the last five years as an assistant coach, athlete clinician, choreographer and judge. Renteria holds a bachelor’s degree in sport psychology and a master’s in kinesiology with an emphasis in sport and exercise psychology from Texas Christian University. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in counseling psychology with a sport psychology emphasis at the University of North Texas.

A second Combined Athlete Director seat was added to board following the addition of a seat for abuse survivors earlier this year. The addition of the Combined Athlete Director seat ensures athletes who have competed within the last 10 years comprise at least 33% representation on the board.

Renteria joins current athlete directors Sarah Finnegan (women’s artistic), Brandon Wynn (men’s artistic), Rebecca Sereda (combined discipline) and U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee Athletes’ Advisory Council representatives Logan Dooley and Serena Lu. She was elected to the position by active acrobatic, rhythmic, and trampoline and tumbling athletes in a special election held earlier this month. Renteria’s term runs through 2026.
