Indianapolis, Ind. – USA Gymnastics announced today that 1976 Olympic Bronze Medalist Peter Kormann, 44, of Columbus, Ohio, has been named head coach of the 2000 U.S. Olympic men’s gymnastics team, subject to approval by the U.S. Olympic Committee.

Kormann is the Men’s National Team Coordinator for USA Gymnastics, a position he has held since 1996. He will maintain the coordinator position as well as the Olympic coaching position.
“I believe that Peter’s vast experience as both a coach and a competitor, and his passion for the sport of gymnastics is invaluable as he leads the men to Sydney,” said Bob Colarossi, President of USA Gymnastics.
“I am very honored to have been selected as the 2000 Olympic coach,” said Kormann. “My goal for the team is to bring home a medal. This group of men is talented and experienced, and they are ready to show the world that the U.S. is a top contender.”
The role of gymnastics coach is nothing new to Kormann. He served as head coach of the 1996 men’s Olympic Team, and head coach of the 1995, 1997 and 1999 World Championships Teams. Kormann coached the 1995 Gold Medal Pacific Alliance Team and the 1994 Bronze Medal Goodwill Games Team. Furthermore, he was head coach of the Ohio State University men’s gymnastics team from 1989-1996 and the United States Naval Academy men’s gymnastics team from 1983-1988. In 1996, Kormann coached Ohio State to the NCAA Championships title.
Kormann was the first United States gymnast since 1932 to win an Olympic medal when he took the bronze in the floor exercise at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal. He is a two-time gold medalist at the Pan American Games. While at Southern Connecticut State College, he became the only gymnast ever to win both the NCAA Division II and Division I all-around titles in the same year.
Kormann was a member of 20 U.S. National Teams, earned 20 All-American designations and won eight NCAA individual titles.
