USA advances to event finals at Cottbus World Cup

COTTBUS, Germany, March 23, 2012 – All three of the U.S. men competing at the 2012 World Cup in Cottbus, Germany, advanced to individual event finals on March 24-25.

John Orozco of the Bronx, N.Y./Team Hilton HHonors, and Jesse Silverstein of Spring Valley, N.Y./Gymnastics Development Center II, both qualified for the still rings finals on March 24. Both Orozco and Silverstein earned a 15.050 in the prelims, putting them in seventh and eighth place and in the final round. Brazil's Arthur Nabarrete Zanetti had the event's highest score at 15.675.

Paul Ruggeri of Manlius, N.Y./University of Illinois, made the vault finals with his two-vault average of 15.900 and a fourth-place ranking in the prelims. He earned a 15.925 on his first vault and a 15.875 on his second. Spain's Issac Botella Perez had the highest vault average in the prelims at 15.975.

Both Ruggeri and Orozco qualified for the horizontal bar finals. Ruggeri turned in the top prelim score at 15.725, with Orozco in third at 15.175.

The finals for vault and high bar will be on Sunday, March 25. Preliminary round scores do not carry forward to the final round.
