U.S. rhythmic group finishes fourth in the 2011 Pan Am all-around final

GUADALAJARA, Mexico, Oct. 16, 2011 – The six-member U.S. rhythmic group placed fourth in the all-around group competition at the 2011 Pan American Games today at the Nissan Gymnastics Stadium in the Lopez Mateos Sports Complex in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Tying for third with Cuba after the first apparatus (5-ball) with a score of 23.600, a medal was still within grasp of the group. Scoring 23.225 in the second apparatus (3-ribbon, 2-hoop), however, placed them in fourth with a final all-around score of 46.825. Brazil claimed first with 48.575, and Canada and Cuba placed second and third withscores of 47.950 and 47.175, respectively.

"Tomorrow is a new day," Sydney Sachs of Deerfield, Ill./North Shore Rhythmic Gymnastics Center, said. "So hopefully we will get our act together, realize what is important to us, finish out the season well and fight until the end. That's what we do best – we just fight until the end."

Gymnastics competition will continue tomorrow as Julie Zetlin of Bethesda, Md./Capital Rhythmics, and Shelby Kisiel of Missouri City, Texas/North Shore Rhythmic Gymnastics Center, contend for a medal in the hoop and ball individual event finals, as well as the rhythmic group competition in the 5-ball event final. The U.S. trampoline team will also compete in their individual trampoline qualifications.
