Mizoguchi wins parallel bars at 2011 Puerto Rico Cup

MAYGUEZ, Puerto Rico, July 10, 2011 – Tyler Mizoguchi of Houston, who trains with the University of Illinois, won the parallel bars gold medal at the 2011 Puerto Rico Cup in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. Brandon Wynn of Voorhees, N.J., a member of Team Hilton HHonors, picked up the horizontal bar silver medal on the final day of competition.

Mizoguchi, who also claimed the pommel horse bronze, tallied a 15.225 to claim the gold medal. Colombia's Jorge Giraldo was the silver medalist at 15.100, followed by Puerto Rico's Luis F. Vargas at 14.900. Wynn just missed the medal podium with his fourth-place finish at 14.875.

On the horizontal bar, Wynn, who earlier won the still rings gold medal and the all-around silver medal, finished behind Vargas in the finals. Vargas posted a 14.900 to take the title, with Wynn earning a 14.600 for second and Puerto Rico's Luis Rivera landing in third at 14.475. Andrew Elkind of Cherry Hill, N.J./U.S. Olympic Training Center at Colorado Springs, tied with Argentina's Nicolas Cordoba for fourth at 14.375. Wynn also was sixth on vault, which was won by Rivera.

Earlier in the competition, the USA won the team silver medal. The U.S. Team, made up of three junior and three senior members of the national team, also included Adrian de los Angeles of Long Beach, Calif./SCATS HB, and Sam Mikulak of Newport Coast, Calif./University of Michigan. Justin Spring of the University of Illinois and Grigor Chalikyan of SCATS HB are the coaches for the U.S. team.

This international competition featured 75 gymnasts from 12 countries – Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Columbia, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, United States, and Venezuela.
