Celebrate Olympic Day -- June 23, 2010

Olympic Day, held annually on June 23, is celebrated by thousands of people in more than 160 countries.

Commemorating the birth of the modern Olympic Games, Olympic Day is not only a celebration, but an international effort to promote fitness and well-being in addition to Olympic ideals of fair play, perseverance, respect and sportsmanship.

Join the celebrations taking place from June 19-27 as communities across the United States celebrate Olympic Day through educational programming and other activities. What a fun idea to incorporate into your summer camps and activities! One of the best ways to instill these virtues in our leaders of tomorrow is through events organized and supported by local communities.

The United States Olympic Committee's (USOC) goal is to work with host organizations, Olympians and Paralympians to grow Olympic Day and to promote physical fitness and Olympic Values in communities across the United States. To accomplish this, the USOC has designed a tool kit and a turn-key program that will assist communities across the nation in celebrating Olympic Day. This year, the USOC will is making its best effort to work with the over 10,000 Olympians and Paralympians currently living in the United States to have an athlete present at each Olympic Day celebration, sharing their experiences and the role Olympic ideals have played in their life.

By celebrating Olympic Day, we can not only improve the communities we live in today, but inspire the champions of tomorrow!

Visit the Olympic Day website for more information and a participant's toolkit.

New Member Club Benefit: Parents Magazine National Advertising Campaign

USA Gymnastics is proud to announce that we will be launching our next national advertising campaign in September 2010.

This campaign is specifically designed to inform parents of our message that gymnastics is part of our human nature, and gymnastics clubs are the very best place for young people to safely learn about fitness and healthy habits. This year's campaign includes a full-color print insert to be featured in the September 2010 issue of Parents magazine. Parents magazine is a nationally recognized and well- respected periodical with a circulation of 2.2 million.

The campaign message will continue to build on last year's "Life needs..." idea by drawing on the ways that some of the most important principles of future success for young people are reinforced through the gymnastics environment. The insert will direct readers to our website where they can search for a Member Club in their area.

Beginning this month, current USA Gymnastics Member Clubs will receive the 2010-2011 marketing kit that includes two new (18" x 36") posters as seen above.

The Parents magazine campaign inserts will be shipped in August. Each Member Club will receive 250 print inserts as part of your marketing materials. Additional copies of the print insert will be available for purchase using the order sheet found in your Marketing Kit.

For more information about the new campaign, contact Member Club services at 317-829-5654.

Safety Matters: Physical Preparation

Gymnastics injury prevention can be divided into five preparation areas: philosophical, physical, technical, tactical and psychological. These areas function as a pyramid, one building upon the other.

Physical preparation forms the foundation upon which the remaining preparation areas (technical, tactical, and psychological) are built. Physical fitness is perhaps the single most practical means of injury prevention.

Specific areas of physical preparation to consider with regard to gymnastics activities include

  • participation readiness
  • warm-up
  • physical fitness
  • nutritional fitness
These and other key risk management principles can be found in the new edition of the Gymnastics Risk Management Safety Course Handbook, now available through the USA Gymnastics technical materials online store.

USA Gymnastics is a non-for-profit organization which is the sole national governing body (NGB) for the sport of gymnastics in the United States. Our mission is to increase public awareness of, and encourage participation in, all aspects of gymnastics, and to support athletes in their pursuit of competitive excellence.
