Summary Description
The Vice President of Communications & Marketing is a key member of the organization's leadership team, responsible for all external-facing brand and communications strategy. This role will strategize, lead and execute all communications efforts, including internal, executive, community and public-facing communications; media relations, responses and outreach; crisis communications; event-related media operations; and social media strategy. In addition, this role will oversee the strategy and implementation for all brand, content, and marketing efforts, including the organization's visual identity, brand asset design and use, content capture and creation, event marketing materials and communications, and video and graphic design.

Strategic Communications

  • Nurture an authentic connection between USA Gymnastics and its constituents through intentional and meaningful communications' efforts
  • Ensure that USA Gymnastics' communications and marketing efforts intentionally further the Mission and Values of the organization, while celebrating all disciplines and all levels of the sport
  • Set the overall strategy, timeline, and tactics for communicating with all of USA Gymnastics' members, volunteers, and other constituents
  • Advise, draft and create presentations and messaging for the CEO and other executive communications
  • Leadstrategic communications on sensitive and urgent issues
  • Partner with the Membership team to ensure consistent, alignment and strategy for all membership communications
Media and Public Relations
  • Develop strategy for, and lead, all media relations and engagements; build strong relationships with key media members
  • Serve as a primary media contact for USA Gymnastics and as a press liaison with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC)
  • Write and oversee news/content distribution, including press releases, website stories, and other media/external facing materials
  • Work closely with the Communications Manager on all proactive media outreach and reactive media responses
  • Partner with the USOPC, International Gymnastics Federation, other National Governing Bodies, and additional stakeholders on media-related issues Brand and Marketing
  • Lead strategy for implementing a compelling and consistent brand identity and voice across all USA Gymnastics platforms
  • Lead strategy for developing engaging brand storytelling, including video, social, graphic design and other creative elements
  • Lead efforts to promote and market USA Gymnastics events through digital, social, traditional and other channels
Social Media
  • Oversee strategy for using social media channels to bring USA Gymnastics' Mission and Values to life through content, including celebrating athletes and other community members in all disciplines and at all levels of the sport, highlighting accomplishments and human interest stories and more.
    Together with the Social Media Manager, develop content calendar and strategy for consistent and effective social media channel management, content planning, follower engagement, and success measurement
Press Operations for Events
  • Determine best pre-event communications strategy to provide organizational updates and set the stage for each event
  • Organize and work closely with the Communications Manager to develop processes for event media operations, including operations planning, media credentialing, media material preparation, athlete interviews, on-site media and production management, post-event media follow-up, etc.
  • Facilitate agreements, access, and operations for broadcast and production crews, when required
Cross-Functional Work
  • Work closely with the Events team, Programs team, Membership team, and others to ensure alignment, consistency and strength in messaging
Requirements and Competencies
  • Deep background overseeing complex communications programs on behalf of high-profile brands
  • Ability to develop a strong, strategic plan for organizational communications aimed at building trust with, and influencing, diverse stakeholders
  • Excellent understanding of the media landscape, regionally, domestically, and internationally
  • Experience with crisis communications strategy development and execution
  • Shown success building and maintaining trusted media relationships
  • Experience leading successful content marketing and digital content efforts, ideally related to sports and/or events
  • Experience "selling" concepts and ideas, and generating enthusiasm for events, people, and mission-driven organizations
  • Understanding of the athlete experience and the passion and commitment required to compete at the highest level of sport
  • Capability to distill information clearly and to explain complex issues with precision and consistency
  • Ability to think strategically and see the big picture, while also executing and working in the details
  • Ability to work as part of a team and to tackle problems effectively and independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with all functional units of an organization
  • Cultural and global awareness
  • Ability to pro-actively problem solve; ability to maintain a positive "can do" attitude under stress
  • Ability and willingness to travel and work weekends/holidays
  • Ability to multi-task; take initiative; be deadline-oriented; maintain confidentiality and work both as part of a team and independently
  • Experience with gymnastics preferred
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree, with a major in journalism, communications, public relations or similar area of study
  • Minimum ten (10) years of relevant experience needed
Other Information
  • Position is located in Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Salary and benefits commensurate with experience
  • Weekend work and extensive travel at times are required
